Under the Australian Immigration, a de facto relationship can be coined when you and your partner are
not married legally to each other but:
- you are formally committed to each other to a shared life excluding all others
- your present relationship is genuine and continuing
- you maintain a live-in relationship with your partner or do not live apart on a permanent basis
- you are not related by your family
A de facto partner can be someone of the same or different sex. Online relationships or dating time spent are not considered under the de facto relationship.
